Acer Aspire Timeline 1810t Netbook Review

Acer Aspire Timeline 1810t Netbook Review – 6.5/7

This netbook/ultrathin has been around for a while now, but Acer have just launched a Special Olympic Edition and so we thought we’d see how the 1810t stacks up post-CES.

The Timeline 1810t fills a gap between the burgeoning netbook market and the hesitant notebook one. It features an 11.6 inch screen with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, a very snappy 1.3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor, 4GB of RAM (3 for the Olympic Edition) and runs on Windows 7 Home Premium (Starter for the Olympic Edition). That’s super impressive specs for a netbook, and not bad at all for a notebook. The one place where a lot of these in-between machins falter is the battery life, but the Acer Timeline 1810t pushes past 8 hours with ease. This is due to the Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) processor. Let’s take a look at what else it’s got going for it.

Acer Aspire Timeline 1810t Netbook Review – Top Features

  • Superlative Performance – The Timeline 1810t whoops the pants off other netbooks. The processor-RAM combine make for an excellent computing experience.
  • Very Portable – The 1810t weighs in at a very light 3.1 lbs which is quite superb with regard to the screen size and battery.
  • Battery Life – This is one of the best features of this machine. It combines a superior performance with an all day battery which is unique. The battery life ran well past 8 hours in a live test.
  • Design and Looks – While the chassis is identical to the Acer 751h, we still love its sleek lines and think it’s especially sexy with the lid down.

Acer Aspire Timeline 1810t Netbook Review – Drawbacks and things to keep in mind

  • Lid Attracts Fingerprints – The lid is a glossy one and as with all glossies, is a magnet for prints. The Olympic Edition features an aluminium lid though which negates this problem.
  • Graphics Falter - We outputted hi-def video at 1920 x 1080 resolution via HDMI to an LCD screen and had minor problems (Blame the Intel 4500MHD graphics). This is not to say the graphics don’t trump regular netbooks, just that they fall short of the ION-powered ones.

Acer Aspire Timeline 1810t Netbook Review – Ratings

  1. Price and Value for money – 0.75 Star. The pricing puts this within direct comparision of some notebooks, and at about $200 more than the ION-powered ASUS 1201N. You do have a better processor, battery life and can run heavier applications.
  2. Speed and Performance – 0.75 Star. The 1810t is a very snappy and responsive machine with no performance problems. Graphics are not top-notch though.
  3. Screen – 1.0 Star. The size is large for netbooks, it has high resolution, is bright and plays HD video.
  4. Keyboard, Touchpad, Useability – 1.0 Star. The Acer Timeline 1810t has a full sized keyboard with large keys. The touchpad is large and responsive.
  5. Portability and Battery Life – 1.0 Star. The battery runs past 8 hours and the chassis is thin and light. Score!
  6. Looks and Design – 1.0 Star. This netbook is quite goodlooking. It’s like a supermodel – thin and sexy.
  7. Connectivity and Extensibility – 1.0 Star. This netbook has adequate ports and WiFI capability with the twin bonuses of HDMI and Bluetooth.

This gives the Acer Timeline 1810t an overall rating of 6.5 out of 7 Stars.

Acer Aspire Timeline 1810t Netbook Review – Our Recommendation

It boils down to why you’re buying this netbook. If it’s a second machine to supplement a laptop, maybe you’d be better off buying a more budget-friendly model. If however, money is not an option or you’re looking for a mobile computer that combines the best of both worlds – the Acer Timeline 1810t is an excellent choice.

The Timeline 1810t is available on amazon for $699. The Special Olympics Edition with 3GB RAM and Windows 7 Starter costs $579.99.

Acer Aspire Timeline 1810t Netbook Review – What have buyers on amazon said?

Pros:

  1. “The definition and clarity of the screen/graphics are great; color is vivid as well.”
  2. “There are a lot of handy one-touch type features like one that will black out the screen (could be used to thwart that nosy neighbor in the seat next to you).”
  3. “The processor speed is awesome and can do more than traditional office productivity and web browing activities. Loaded statistics software and it blazes.”

Cons:

  1. “The only negative is the the sounds from the speakers is quite weak.”
  2. “Video card is not that good. While it does play HD movies, it doesn’t seem to like high end games well.”

  2. I just took possession of the Olympic model, loaded with appropriate software. Easy keyboard, great screen, great battery life, and for those not storying billions of files this is as good as most PC’s in an overall way. Light, more like a scribbler, small portable yet powerful. Looks like a mini-workhorse with wings.
