The first thing that catches the eye about the 1008P is the stunning lid design. The netbook casing has been designed by leading industrial design icon Karim Rashid and features interwoven checks in a wave like pattern. The lid surface is not smooth and undulates slightly which gives it a unique appeal. The material used is the similar rubberized one we’ve been seeing in netbooks of late and we approve wholeheartedly.
To no one’s surprise, the ASUS 1008P ships with Intel’s Atom N450 series of processors. Two nice additions are the 2GB of RAM and320GB of storage that come embedded in this netbook. Complaints regarding its predecessor – the 1008HA were that since the battery was designed within the netbook, it was unreplaceable; and that there was no easy way to upgrade RAM. Both these have been alleviated with the new 1008P. It features a slot for RAM upgrades as well as an interchangeable 3-cell battery capable of lasting 4 hours.
The new chiclet styled keyboard is also very cool, as are the two color choices – hot pink and matte brown.The price is a bit steep at a shade under $500.

- Styling a cut above the rest – Mr. Rashid shows us why he’s won over 300 design awards and really makes the 1008P something else. Combined with its super slim chassis, this netbook is by far the best looking one out there. Like so far, that there’s chasm in between it and the next.
- Quality Interface – ASUS comes through with the chiclet keyboard and dotted touchpad. Both are very comfortable to use.

- Reduced Battery Life – The 1008P has a battery that lasts a measly 4 hours which is way less than most netbooks out there.
- Pricing – This netbook will probably not be a mass seller even though its super cool looking, because it costs about $120 more than say the ASUS 1005PE which lasts almost 3 times as long.

- Price and Value for money – 1.0 Star. This netbook looks gorgeous. That’s your paying for at the end of the day and it follows the norm of any luxury product.
- Speed and Performance – 0.75 Star. The 2GB RAM gives it a filip when compared to other netbooks, and day-to-day tasks are all a little bit snappier.
- Screen – 0.75 Star. The screen is decent with vibrant colors and contrasts, but the viewing angles leave something to be desired. Tilting the screen reduces viewing quality considerably.
- Keyboard, Touchpad, Useability – 1.0 Star. Really nice keyboard and touchpad.
- Portability and Battery Life – 0.75 Star. Split points really. The 1008P is really sleek and light. But its battery life leaves something to be desired.
- Looks and Design – 1.0 Star. We’ve gushed on and on about it, so just look at the pictures.
- Connectivity and Extensibility – 0.75 Star. Considering how thin it is, the 1008P fits in a decent number of ports and has bluetooth.

The 1008P is a designer netbook. And not everyone goes out and buys a designer netbook. That’s the beauty of capitalism – choices. If you’re one of those people to whom form is as important as function, this is a good pick. Yes, it’s significantly more expensive, but the Windows Home Premium package, 320GB storage space and 2GB RAM make up a chunk of that extra cash (Considering costs separately – about $120). Then there’s the sexy design. So you see, its actually a fairly valued netbook and we have no hesitation in recommending it for people who have the cash and are willing to splurge.
