Averatec N1200: Thinnest and Lightest?

We’ve mentioned before how every company is trying to get in on the netbook action, and now Averatec have come out with what they claim is the “thinnest and lightest” netbook out there. While we like the fact that Averatec recognizes that a netbook which isn’t from one of the more popular makers needs to have a hook, we don’t know if that claim is completely above board.

For starters, the lightest tag is a definite no-no with the Sony Vaio X holding that place easily. The Vaio X weighs in at 1.5 lbs, almost 33% less than the Averatecx N1200. Now if they wanted to say that it’s the lightest netbook at a reasonable price, we’d be OK with that.

Then there’s the thinnest claim. Looking at the pictures released, it doesn’t look to be all that slim. The N1200 is supposed to be 0.7mm thick, and I can think of a few netbooks that might be contesting that claim starting with LG’s as yet unreleased X300 and the earlier mentioned Vaio X.

In any case, the Averatec N1200 will probably be noticed. Its specifications include the common Atom 450 chipset with Integrated 3150 Intel graphics and 1GB RAM. There are three models and they differ in operating systems and hard drive sizes. We have to admit that the price tag is quite reasonable with the base N1200 starting at $329. A downer is the 3-cell battery.

The N1200 will be available later this month from Tiger Direct, Best Buy and OfficeMax.
