December’s Bestselling Netbooks

The month’s best selling netbook has been the Acer AOD250-1197 with Windows 7 Starter. The ASUS Eee PC 1005HA held on to the top spot for the last few months, but the price cut to $279.99 really boosted Acer sales. This type of buying behaviour ties in with our theorizing regarding netbooks. Inexpensive netbooks are more popular than those with higher memory, more storage or a better processor. We summarized that with laptops far outclassing netbooks spec-wise, the only justification for netbooks was portability and battery life. With laptop prices hitting $600, the price of netbooks is bound to fall even further. And consumers will cause this by increasing their sales with decreasing prices.

We found vindication in the fact that the Acer AOD250 actually features three of the same model (in different colors) in the top ten list for December.

Except for the ASUS 1005-PU1X models, the rest feature Windows 7 Starter Edition as their operating system. The PU1X runs on Windows XP. Also the battery lives of all the netbooks in the top 10 range from 8 to 10 hours (as claimed).

As has been the case, ASUS and Acer dominate the list. As we mentioned before, the AOD250 features 3 models in the top 10. The ASUS 1005HA is also immensely popular with 4 different models in the top 10. (Read the AOD250 review and ASUS 1005HA review) Toshiba NB205 comes in at third position and an HP Mini and Dell Mini complete the list.

Netbooks will soon feature the new pineview processor – the N450. There’s not much of a change in computing power. You’ll probably get a battery life extension of an hour with the new chip, and for this you’ll maybe shell out $30-$40 more. Although the new chipset has been hyped, there no real tangible upgrade. So our list of netbooks for December is not going to be made redundant anytime soon.
