Dual-Core Atom Processors for Netbooks?

A recent rumor doing the rounds was that Intel was working on dual-core processors in its Atom range specifically for netbooks. Intel CEO Paul Otellini, on a conference call with business analysts, has confirmed that this is indeed the case and specified that this product would be out by the end of the year.

The new dual-cores will probably join the Atom 500 series of chips. They will have integrated memory controllers and grraphics which we’ve heard will support 720p video.

At the conference call, Otellini said, “I think there will still be significant growth in the netbook business year-over-year. I think that there are rather than pricing, I think, we would look to features and integration as a technical novelty or twist here. The next innovation coming out on Atom is dual-core, which comes out in the second quarter, so that it will ramp for the holiday season this year and I think that will be a very attractive product.”
