Intel launches its app store: the AppUp Center

Intel’s plans of launching an application store mimicking Apple’s iStore have been public for a while now. At the CES keynote earlier this week, Intel’s Paul Otellini unveiled the AppUp Center which is primarily geared towards netbooks and MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices).

While it isn’t difficult to find applications on the internet using that Google thing, Intel’s platform for light-weight programs suited to less powerful netbooks makes sense. The beta version has been released for download on Intel’s website and will come pre-installed on Atom netbooks from Acer, ASUS and Samsung. That’s the top 3 netbook makers in case you were wondering, which guarantees a lot of eyeballs on AppUp if nothing else.

Just like the iStore, you have to enter a username, password and credit card details. The store itself is user-friendly with categorization of applications so they’re easy to find. Intel’s been working with over 3000 developers so you’re sure to find some decent apps on this thing.
