Netbook Trends and Netbook Popularity

Amazon is THE largest online retailer with close to $20 billion in sales last year. Plus they publish a bestsellers list across categories. We thought it would be interesting to look at the top 100 netbooks to see what information we could prize out of the list.

Brand Popularity

There’s a clear indication of what brands are popular with more than 1 in every 4 netbooks sold being an ASUS. Also more importantly, 11 out of the top 25 (that’s almost half!) are ASUS products. Acer is next with a whole bunch of netbooks in the second rung category. One of the reasons that ASUS and Acer are on top could be the profligacy with which they release models.

Samsung, who did extremely well and were arched to reach the top of the netbook echeleon haven”t really churned out the product to do so. Toshiba has some nice netbooks and occupies third spot (higher than HP because it has more netbooks in the top rung).

This analysis doesn’t throw up that many surprises really. Taken into totality, netbooks under $330 make up for 60% of sales. The reason why netbooks under $300 may not have that much of an impact is that a lot of these netbooks feature lower specs, and the higher specced model is about $20 or so higher putting it in the $300-$330 category.

The presence of 4 netbooks in the top 10 in the slightly higher $331-$375 rung point to the fact that people are paying for models that have high specifications, but they will only upto a point. The prevalence of 10 netbooks in the above $450 category includes stalwards like the ASUS 1201N and a few tablet convertibles like the Lenovo S10-3t and ASUS T101M.
