Samsung N140 Netbook Review

Samsung N140 Netbook Review - 6.5/7

After the success of its previous 4 models and the particularly excellent N310, this is Samsung’s latest netbook offering. It is to be considered the premium version of the N130 and comes with souped up features and a longer battery life.

In looks, it is almost identical to the NC10, and has about the same build dimensions. It’s lighter though, and there is now a silver strip that runs across the bottom of the case instead of the erstwhile coloured ones. The N140 is available in two colours in the US market – red and blue. It’s specifications are mainly what we’ve come to expect from netbooks, but with a few added tweaks such as the 800MHz RAM (although the Atom processor has a maximum capability for 533MHz) and a 5900 mAh 6-cell battery that Samsung claims will run past 11 hours. All in all, it’s another solid product from the Samsung stable.

Samsung N140 Netbook Review – Top Features

  • Good Keyboard – The best features in Samsung netbooks keep constant and you have the same almost full-sized keyboard with raised keys. No problems typing on this excellent keyboard.
  • Screen - Samsung is the maker of some of the worlds best LCD screens, so it’s no surprise to find a laudable matte finish anti-glare screen that’s bright, sharp and clear.
  • Build and design – The same solid build quality that characterized earlier models is on display again. When closed, the glossy blue and red covers compare favourable with notebooks 4-5 times more expensive and the inner black matted finish is uber stylish.
  • Battery lasts long – Netbook makers usually add an extra hour to how long their models actually last, and in our tests the N140 fell shy of the 11 hour mark, but it wasn’t by much.
  • USB Charging Port – One of the N140′s USB ports charges devices even when it’s power is off. Nice touch.

Samsung N140 Netbook Review – Drawbacks and things to keep in mind

  • Extra memory speed not really required – Even though the N140 has 800MHz of RAM, the comparitively inferior processor it’s running isn’t up to the task of utilizing it.
  • Backward step with the touchpad buttons – This is quite surprising. The earlier touchpad worked fine and was much more responsive to the ones the N140 is packing. But we’re trying to find chinks here.

Samsung N140 Netbook Review – Ratings

  1. Price and Value for money – 0.75 Star. The N140 is what we’ve come to expect from Samsung, a really tight netbook. But at about $60-80 more than a lot of other netbooks out there, we don’t know if it’s completely worth it. In fact the N140 probably faces more competition from its own less dearer predecessors.
  2. Speed and Performance – 0.75 Star. The processor and RAM are staple ones, but Samsung squeezes the most out of them.
  3. Screen – 1.0 Star. Even though the screen has a 1024×600 resolution, it’s an exemplary one.
  4. Keyboard, Touchpad, Useability – 1.0 Star. Samsung has kept its excellent keyboard constant and the touchpad gripe is a minor one.
  5. Portability and Battery Life – 1.0 Star. The N140 weighs in at a spiffy 2.7lbs and the battery life pushes it to the top performer in that space.
  6. Looks and Design – 1.0 Star. There’s been no reinvention but we agree with Samsung’s philosophy “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
  7. Connectivity and Extensibility – 1.0 Star. All the standard USB ports, with Bluetooth 2.1 and the off-power charger.

This gives the Samsung N140 an overall rating of 6.5 out of 7 Stars.

Samsung N140 Netbook Review – Our Recommendation

Everytime we review a Samsung machine, we’re searching out for problems. They are quickly building a reputation as the finest makers of netbooks out there and this has only been strengthened by the N140. We do feel its a bit on the pricey side, but it’s got the differentiating factors that make it worth your while. Definitely a buy.

Samsung N140 Netbook Review – What have buyers on Amazon said?

Pros:

  1. “What was really cool was the partial multi-touch controls which are similar to what Apple uses in its track pads.”
  2. “Battery life: astounding! This was one of the strong points about this netbook.”
  3. “I wanted to add about the Matte finish. It is a joy, much wider viewing angle from the glossy screen.”
  4. “Samsung STILL DELIVERS A GREAT PRODUCT – this MATTE SCREEN is AWESOME, a definite 9 out of 10 review from me. The keyboard is a pleasure to use as far as ANY NETBOOK GOES.”

Cons:

  1. “The touchpad felt smallish, but the whole thing is small so I think that’s just a matter of getting used to it.”
  2. “The product is great but the Samsung Recovery Solution 4 does not work for complete DVD backup as the company claims!”
  3. “It just has a Operating System that isn’t ideally made for a 1.66 GHZ Processor, that is what I think the issue is.”
