Toshiba to come out with 3G netbooks

The FCC website has given us another leak. Toshiba is working on two 3G-capable netbooks, which we think will probably feature the Pine Trail range of processors, specifically the N450. The filing doesn’t give out much information barring the model numbers – NB 300 / NB305 and the fact that the netbooks will be 3G-capable.

There is a fair amount of speculation regarding the netbooks. One such indication is that Toshiba will not sell these netbooks only via their own distribution model, but also tie-up with mobile internet providers. The FCC filing mentions a test of Qualcomm’s Gobi chipset for compatibility with the new Toshiba netbooks. The addition of this chip would mean that internet carriers would not need to modify or add any hardware to the netbooks. These providers like AT&T, Verizon and Spring will sell subsidized versions of the netbook bundled with an internet package.

The processor of choice is most likely to be the N450, both because it is a viably priced option and there will a boost to battery life. However Nvidia has recently announced that their new range of graphics chipsets will be compliant with the Pine Trail processors. Maybe Toshiba goes for one of these, to make the netbook graphically competent.
