Windows 7 Netbooks – Part II
6. ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA-PU17 Netbook
The 1008HA is ASUS’s predecessor to its latest 1005HA, and is still a worthy competitor. It stands out with its super-slim design, measuring 26mm at its thickest point. It’s positioned as a premium netbook, with the home premium version of Windows, 2 GB of RAM and a 320GB HDD. They keyboard is spacious and the trackpad is excellent. The battery life leaves a bit to be desired though, topping out at about 4 hours. Also in keeping with its svelte design, the battery is non-removable and you may face Ipod like problems if it goes kaput. If you want to make heads turn and are looking for a bit of extra computing power, the 1008HA-PU17 may be the answer. A pricey answer though.

The lower rung version of this netbook, the 1008HA-MU17 is available in Black, White, Pink and Blue on amazon and costs between $410-$417. The difference between the two is that the MU17 features only 1GB RAM and a 250GB HDD.
7. Dell Inspiron Mini 1011 Netbook
The Dell Mini 1011 netbook is not going to win any awards for style or features. It packs in a slightly inferior processor apart from the other standard specs, but makes up with an excellent screen which is bright, sharp and glossy. It has a touchpad that incorporates the buttons on its trackpad. This means you need an insane amount of precision to hit them, and deviation makes the cursor move as well. A few months ago, we’d have said the Mini 1011 is a good value pick, but with most of its competitors lowering their prices, there’s nothing special about the Mini 1011 anymore.
- 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor
- 1 GB DDR2 RAM (2GB Max)
- 160GB HDD (5400RPM)
- 10.1″ 1024×600 LCD Display, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g
- Windows 7 Home Starter, 6 cell Li-Ion (5200mAh), 2.6lbs
- Colours – Black
The Dell Mini 1011 (or Mini 10v) is available on amazon for $329.99. Read our full review here.
8. Lenovo S10-2 Netbook
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the S10-2. It’s a goodlooking netbook with nice curved lines, a solid build quality that has you using two hands to open the lid, a nice flex-free keyboard and average specs. Lenovo also has a choice of two unique lid covers to choose from. But we’re not sure if any of this is enough to knock any of their more popular competitors off their perches. The price point is pretty much smack in the middle of Acer/ASUS/Toshiba pricing and the Lenovo battery lasts between 4-5 hours, falling short of the other’s marks. The Lenovo is your average netbook. Period.
- 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor
- 1 GB DDR2 RAM (2GB Max)
- 160GB HDD (5400RPM)
- 10.1″ 1024×600 LED Display, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g

9. Gateway LT2030 Netbook
The Gateway LT series of netbooks are sleek and stylish. The exteriors are glossy and there is some understated bling in the form of a silver strip of branding on the lid, as well as shiny rings around the webcam and hinges. The specifications are nothing out of the ordinary, but the screen and keyboard are quite good. The touchpad is really small though making it uncomfortable to use. Barring that, the LT2030 is quite a decent netbook.
- 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor
- 1 GB DDR2 RAM (2GB Max)
- 250GB HDD (5400RPM)
- 10.1″ 1024×600 High Brightness LED-backlit Display, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g

There is a lower and a higher rung of Gateways. The LT2023 has a 160GB HDD and a 3 cell Li-Ion (2200mAh) battery and costs $330. The LT2044 has a N280 processor and Bluetooth 2.0 at a cost of $377.73.
10. Sony Vaio VPC-W121AX Netbook
The Sony Vaio VPC -W121 works like pretty much any other high-end netbook out there. It comes with the regulation Intel N280 processor, the 250GB HDD and 1GB of RAM. It has standard connectivity ports and a decent enough keyboard. Where the W121 distinguishes itself from other netbooks is the stylish matte design that only Sony can pull off, the generous resolution on its LCD display (1366×768) and the Vaio Multimedia Streaming software that enables data streaming between DLNA-appliances (like your PC or PS 3). It does all of this for about $490, which is about $100-$150 more than comparable netbooks. And therein lies the problem.

- 250GB HDD (5400RPM)
